Posting Jobs for Free

In January of 2011, we came to the decision that Joborilla.ca should be free for employers to post their Saskatoon jobs. The reason: we wanted every employer in Saskatoon and employers everywhere in Saskatchewan to enjoy free advertising. The goal: to provide an employment-only website that everyone can afford.  The result: employers can post as many jobs as they want for as long as they want.

We also significantly increased the flexibility of each job posting and increased the additional features that can be applied to each job. Now, each job posting can run from 7 to 90 days in duration to suite every employers needs. Every job can be edited as often as needed and expired jobs can be rerun so that time isn’t wasted posting jobs that have been posted before. Upgrades such as color and bolding are here to stay so that jobs will stand out better on the search page.  The cost of Featured Jobs has been reduced dramatically to make it more affordable for employers. Two new add-ons are the Search Cycler and Social Media. The Search Cycler keeps jobs at the top of the search page to improve visibility and Social Media broadcasts jobs to all our followers on Facebook and Twitter at the time the job is created. Finally, the very robust and powerful Applicant Tracker is completely free to manage applicants, cover letters, resumes, make notes, and more.

So help support our goal and start posting Saskatoon jobs today on Joborilla.ca. And if you are not an employer based in Saskatoon, who knows, maybe you will find an employee too!

Building Your Resume

Before you read today’s blog entry, open up your resume or grab a copy of it and have a look.  Do you see your reflection?  I’m not talking about seeing your face on your shiny computer screen, but rather I am asking if your resume reflects exactly who and what you are? Is this what you want Saskatoon employers to see you as?

It’s time that you start thinking of your resume like a mirror.  Everything you are to employers is contained in those simple pieces of paper.  Imagine hundreds upon hundreds of resumes laid out in front of you. Each one representing someone who believes they are also the right person for the job. This is the situation employers face when hiring new employees. Regardless of the size of the business, number of qualifications needed, or whether the job is in Saskatoon or a small town somewhere in Saskatchewan, employers all see your resume in the same way.

When an employer looks at your resume, they need to see your reflection; if they can’t, there is a great chance that they will move on.  Mirror yourself and your attributes and make sure that your resume is showing the REAL you and not a distorted, blurry silhouette.  If your resume says you are motivated, hard-working, and creative – you should ensure that when you look at your resume, it looks like someone motivated, hard-working, and creative wrote it!

First, polish your resume.  Ever looked at your reflection in a mirror that is smudged or dirty?  It’s the same feeling employers get if they look at a resume full of spelling mistakes and minimal formatting.  Take the time to read it over and checkout some online resume templates if you need help formatting. We have compiled the top Saskatoon resume writing services in our Career Help.

Second, take care of your resume.  Try looking at your reflection in a mirror that is cracked or broken.  Employers see the same when they’re looking at a resume that is all wrinkly and covered in coffee stains!  Keep you resume in mint condition.

Ultimately it is up to you.  Your resume can be the mirror in a 5-star hotel or it could be the mirror in a gas station restroom. If you want to get an interview for that job you’ve been hoping for, its time to take some time and ensure you can see that reflection clearly and you like what you see. When you know your ready, you can start applying to Saskatoon jobs.

Employment and Growth in Saskatchewan

Now that 2010 has been history for just about a month, we think its time to take a look at how employment has been doing in Saskatchewan.

Fortunately for Saskatchewan residents, employment has been at an all-time high. Despite predictions from economists that Saskatchewan will follow the rest of the country into a depression, Saskatchewan has remained strong.  According to the latest release from Statistics Canada, the unemployment rate in Saskatchewan is at a record low of 5.5 per cent, well above the national average of 7.6 per cent. Regina is currently ranked first in Canada at 4.6 per cent while Saskatoon sits at fourth with a modest 5.6 per cent. December has also been Saskatchewan’s eleventh straight month of continued growth.

If you take a look around Saskatoon, you don’t need statistics to indicate that jobs are plentiful and the economy is booming. Construction around the University of Saskatchewan and downtown Saskatoon are more than enough to indicate that the economy is doing well. Searching for jobs isn’t a problem either with many opportunities appearing daily. With so many jobs available, Saskatoon and the rest of Saskatchewan are obviously a hot spot for foreign investment and it appears this trend will continue far into the future.

Despite a strong economic outlook, Saskatchewan must continue to change and adapt. The workforce needs to continue to become more inclusive and include all Saskatchewan residents in strategic planning and development. In doing so, employment and career opportunities can become available from North to South, East to West, and include all residents of Saskatchewan.

Just because Saskatchewan has stepped on the gas, there is no need to set cruise. Saskatoon and the rest of Saskatchewan should continue to move forward, to develop, to innovate, and continue to lead Canada far into the future. So, the next time you apply for a job and aren’t hired, don’t sweat it, the are still plenty of job available in Saskatoon and throughout Saskatchewan.

Today’s Spelling Lesson – Entrepreneur

It’s a big word, but what does it mean.  Well I think most people know that an entrepreneur is someone that starts their own business, but what does it really mean?

Have you ever done something that makes you think, “Why is this so difficult?”.  That’s exactly how we felt when we started Joborilla.ca.  We were frustrated with current job websites and knew that we could develop a website that was years ahead of our competition if we just put in the time.  It was going to be a long road, but we thought let’s do it and a year later, Joborilla.ca became a reality.

Anyone can build a business from the ground up, but success is hinged upon an unwavering passion for what you are doing, a clear vision of your future success, and dedication of immense amounts of time.  The reward?  If you are passionate about what you are doing, work no longer feels like work!

So, if you are having difficulty finding a job that suits you or maybe you’re just not truly happy doing what you’re doing, it’s time to take a look at who you really are.  Find your passion and then find a “Why is this so difficult?” moment of your own that relates to your passion.  Brainstorm solutions to the problem you identify, research the market, be creative, and go for it!

In these difficult economic times, bring the job to you!  You will never need to be hired if you have your own business, so you might as well get started.  It’s amazing how many people have great ideas that they just do not pursue.  Why don’t they?  Think about it.

If anyone has any great ideas or wants to share their entrepreneurial experiences with us we would be more than happy to hear them!

Work is Fun?

You’ve just landed a job and you’re hoping that it is everything you’ve always wanted. Well it can be everything you’ve always wanted if you believe it can be and you act accordingly. It is important that you realize that your actions and attitudes will actually shape your work environment. So the next time that you are feeling like your job maybe isn’t all that it is cracked up to be, have a look at yourself before you blame your job or your coworkers

1) If you run out of things to do, or you notice that a coworker is unusually busy, offer to give them a hand, they will likely return the favour in the future.

2) Be willing to listen to the opinions and ideas of your coworkers when you are tackling a job together.

3) Give credit when credit is due. Make sure that you compliment your coworkers if they have done a great job and never take credit for jobs that you didn’t do!

4) Be positive! Positive people are fun to be around. Having an optimistic attitude towards working can actually make your job more enjoyable for you and your coworkers.

5) Lead by example. We’re all familiar with people that are easy to be heard, but rare to be seen when work rolls around. Do your job, do it well, and show your coworkers that you take pride in what you do. Remember what they say, actions speak louder than words!

Put some of these steps into action the next time that you go to work and we can guarantee you’ll be happier, your coworkers will be happier, you’ll be more productive, and you will finally be able to use fun and work in the same sentence!

Seeing Is Succeeding

It’s the night before your big interview for that job you’ve been eying for some time now.  You have done your best to shrug off the pressure and keep focused and calm.  No matter how many times you tell yourself that things will go great and you will get the job, you’re still nervous.  How can you overcome these feelings and what can you do to ensure that you stay cool and collected at your interview?

One of the best things a person can do is visualize positive outcomes and picture yourself succeeding, it’s your imagination so have fun with it.

Close your eyes and imagine your 1989 Lumina is a brand new convertible Benz that you are cruising to your job interview in without a care in the world.  The wind is blowing through your hair and your favourite song is on the radio.  You pull up at the office for your interview, check your hair (which still looks perfect despite the convertible), walk into the office and meet your future employer.  The questions are simple! Why do you want to work for us? What are your three greatest strengths? Why do you think you would be a great fit in our company?  You finish the interview with a smile and it could not have gone better.  You know that you put your best foot forward and you will get a phone call in the next few days from the employer saying that you are hired!

Keep feeling positive and know that you would not be going for an interview if the employer did not see something in your resume that made them think you were capable of doing the job!  In other words, you’re already hired, you just need to make it final by letting the employer see how great you really are!

Hiring Online

If I told you that the world was shrinking and your life was speeding up would you agree? The Internet is powerful, so powerful that you can receive e-mails in seconds, read news the minute it happens, video chat with people in another hemisphere, do business on a global stage.I think you get the point.

In order to survive in such a connected society, employers need to keep up with the times. Many employers today may still feel more comfortable posting a job in a newspaper. Yes, it’s tangible. Yes, you can touch it. Yes, you could even cut it out and stick it to your fridge to admire and show your friends, but are you getting the value you deserve and the results that will help your business grow?

Let’s try something…think of someone that you know that does not own a computer.

Can you think of anyone?

Grandpas and grandmas don’t count by the way; I’m talking about someone you know that is currently working, or of age to be employed. I would bet that your left hand would be enough to count the number of people you can think of. Now think how many people today have newspaper subscriptions.

The newspaper contains news, but the problem is that it contains yesterday’s news. People can read the news in real-time on the Internet and this is exactly where your jobs need to be if you are looking to get the best results. Why pay to put a billboard next to a road with no traffic? Joborilla.ca is designed to help employers harness the power of the Internet. You can run an advertisement for 30 days or Pay-per-Day! Check out our job posting plans to find one that works for you (we are certain you will). If you are new to posting jobs online, don’t sweat it we’re here to help.
